Our First Meeting

Today we had our first meeting about our project and how we are goin to accomplish it.

We talked about what we have done so far and what we need to do and how we are going to acheive this.

Our goal is to start to make a difference on the pollution of the Hautapu river.

We also thought about writing an article to the Taihape Times to tell the community what is polluting it and how we can solve this. Jess was choosen to write this article Michael Proof read it and ill will type it out.

We picked our Facillitator to be Michael and our note taker to be Jess.

We also as a class choose Jess and Michael to ring Horizions to see if they could find out what the pollution level in the Hautapu River is but unfortunatly they couldnt get through and had to leave a message.

Josh, Cassandra, Teri and Josh are goin to try update the wiki sometime through this week.

Mrs Hansen, Becka and Cody were absent from this meeting.

We will keep you posted on our meetings.

Hi Ariana, I am reading with interest from Wellington. Good luck with Horizons, they should be able to provide you a lot of information about the current polution in the Hautapu River. I look forward to reading your reports about how you get on.

Hi Ari, I have just read your site with interest and am pleased that your group has decided to try to help with the pollution in the Hautapu. You know we used to swim in the river under the Hautapu Road bridge and around where the dam used to be(not that we were meant to of course). It was quite clear then. We used to catch some huge eels there. We also used to swim at Papakai a lot as it was a popular swimming and picnic spot for the locals. We used to swing out over the river on a rope and climb up and dive off the banks. I was sorry to see the state it was in the last time I was in NZ. Good luck in your endeavours and I will continue to catch up with your progress through your site.

Hi Ariana,

Wow, it sounds like you had a very productive meeting! I'm really pleased to know that your class is working as a team to make a difference in the community.

And I wholeheartedly support your plans to write an article for the Taihape Times. If it gets published in the paper, please let me know because I would like to read it.

Are you guys taking photographs of the river clean-up? If so, I would definitely like to see those "before" and "after" photos. If it's not too much of a bother, perhaps you may be able to put them on your blog.

At any rate, I will keep checking your blog as you guys continue making progress with this project.

I think what you're doing not only benefits your local community, it also inspires folks like me who live across the globe.

Please keep up the good work, and if there's anything I can do to help, please let me know!

Hi Ariana,

I'm from Auckland and reading about your project for fighting Pollution in the Hautapu River - I think its a great idea to do an article on the problem and get it printed in the Taihape Times - getting more people to become aware of the problem should certainly help.
Good luck with your project - will look forward to reading how the prokect is going

Hi Ari,

I'm writing from London. I live really close to a very big river that played a huge part in the development of London ... it's called the Thames. You might have heard about it? Ask Miss Hansen - I'm sure she'll know some stuff (I've heard she's pretty smart).

In fact I think that London wouldn't be the amazing city that it is today if it weren't for the Thames river. It's probably quite different from the Hautapu. It rises and falls by something like 8 metres with the tides. It's also very brown (which probably has a bit to do with pollution I think). Anyway, lots of money and resources are being put into making it a cleaner river but it's going to take lots of time. I think that for hundreds of years people just saw it as a way to get from A to B and a way to get rid of rubbish and effluent. It got so dirty that it used to catch fire - can you imagine! I found this group that care for the river online - here's the link, it might give you some ideas for your project.

Good luck with it. I'll be checking up to see how you are all getting on. As a kiwi away from home it's good to know that some people are caring for one of the things I miss the most!
